Beltane : From the Heart

Tonight is May Eve, also known as Walpurgisnacht, the night before the Wiccan sabbat called Beltane. Beltane comes in midst of Spring, when nature;s generative powers are evident. In contemporary Paganism, Beltane has become, among other things, a celebration of pleasure, sexuality and sensuality. The joy of being physical, of having bodies and experiencing the wide range of emotions and desires, our capacity for play and creativity, and our ability to heal when we come together in community—all of these are the sacred gifts of Beltane.

In this time of celebration and joy, when love and passion are on our minds, can we look beyond the routine of every day and ask ourselves: Do we live with passion? When do we feel that? What deeply held value, what soul's longing, can we commit to today?

May Day 2015: Looking deeper

I write this on Beltane eve, later than I hoped.  A bout with some bug has laid me low and I will not be up to my usual activities this Sabbat.  But perhaps my enforced period of solitude has enabled me to think a little more deeply than I might have about the meaning of this time.

Beltane and May Day comprise one of the two most important Wiccan Sabbats, the other, Samhain, being six months away.  For Wiccans and most other NeoPagans Beltane marks the beginning of summer.  We believe every basic dimension of physical existence is sacred in its own way, and seek to honor each at that time of the year when it can be most powerfully symbolized in ritual and celebration.  Beltane and May Day so honor summer.

Walking the Path

As the wheel of the year turns and takes us with it, our lives are interwoven in the constant death-rebirth-renewal cycle. I watch as new spring leaves are starting to awaken around me and I pause to tie these themes into the deeper meanings of my life.

New Book: No Horns On These Helmets

No Horns On These Helmets is a short story anthology with a theme of Vikings, heathen cultures, and Norse and Germanic mythology. I edited this collection of 20 stories by 20 authors, and also have one story in it myself. The genres included are fantasy, science fiction, historical, urban fantasy, and retold folktales.

I was asked to edit this anthology for two reasons: I write and edit in the science fiction and fantasy genres, and as the author of Asatru For Beginners, I know my heathen material. Right from the selection of the title, No Horns On These Helmets, the publisher (Sky Warrior Books) and I decided we wanted this anthology to have stories that got the historical details and the details of heathen mythology and culture right. There actually is one story in the anthology that has a character who wears a horned helmet, but that story is one of the humor pieces. I selected the stories first and foremost for authenticity. Some of the authors are heathen or pagan, and some are not, but they all know their history and mythology.

b2ap3_thumbnail_crossroads-in-woods.jpg"I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult." – E.B. White

Full Moon charts are generally said to be in effect only for the two weeks until the next New Moon. But a chart is a single moment in time on the restless sea of planetary movements - a moment that lets us get a reading on where we’re heading, and make any necessary course corrections Used wisely, the course that is set in that moment can influence our lives far beyond the next couple of weeks.

Pagan News Beagle: Earthy Thursday, April 30

This week on Earthy Thursday we take a look at the world of plants, fungi, and other non-animal organisms. We often think of these seemingly "vegetative" lifeforms as less alive than animals but I think you'll agree that after seeing the stories we've gathered that's far from the truth. Additionally, we've got a few extra stories, including one about the Yellowstone supervolcano.

Lover's Gift

Lovers reach towards
One another seeking
The fires of creation’s
Sacred union

Mouth to mouth
Hand to hand

Bodies pressed tightly
In rapturous embrace.

Lovers dance held in
Passion's sweet embrace.

Each step a garden of
Spring flowers left in
Lusty foot fall's place.

Lovers yearn to see
Love reflected back
In upturned face.

Two become one
As each holds fast
To their separateness.

Lovers hold the gift
Of creation in the pure
Essence of their love.

The dance of courtship
And coyly sought mating
Awakens the fires of
Planet’s act of creation.

And in lover’s passionate
Union the greening of
The earth is begun.

All of life quickens
As HIS passion's heat
Shines down upon
HER body of fertile
Verdant grace.

The fertile womb of the Goddess is filled with the Light of quickening at this time of the year. Look around you! Life awaits the seed of potential. Life is bursting with anticipation of reaching its fullness. Delicate flowers are blooming and the growing heat of the sun stirs us to our passionate acts of creation in all of its forms. We are inspired, we are enlivened as the hand of the Maiden seeks the warm caress of her Lover's embrace.
