The equinox is upon us, bringing light and dark again into balance, so it is again time for us to turn our minds to our toothbrushes.
That's right, toothbrushes.
I'm a big believer in using visuals to honor the change of seasons, and changing my toothbrush has long been part of my personal practice. Dentists think it should be changed every three months, and what do you know, seasons happen every three months, as well! My hygienist friends are pleased because I remember a task that many people don't, and it's also helped me remember that I really ought to respect the cycles of nature as the flow past me, so it's a win-win. And if you factor in the environmental and social factors that I lay out below, it's either a win-win-win or a win-win-win-win.
The autumn equinox is fast upon us – the time when the balance tips from the light half of the year to the dark half.Daylight hours are on the wane and soon the night and twilight hours will take precedence, allowing us a time for rest, for thought and for reflection.
Now we are diving deep into the cool waters of the West, into autumn’s light.The equinox is just around the corner, and the new moon of September passed.This year we will be blessed by a nearly full moon over the equinox, which is at 21:44 on Sunday, 22 September (where I live in the UK).The tipping point is near, the balance will shift, and we will enter into the fading times of restful thought, of dreaming in the dark.
Spring should be a time of flights of fancy. Keep with the vibe of the season and hold a light and high-spirited dinner party for six to eight of your closest. Invite people to wear "welcome spring" accessories– whatever that may mean to them. This could range from a flower demurely tucked behind one's ear to a full on toga. Nudge people not to be bashful with this. If you want to keep things carefree, why not create less work for yourself playing host or hostess? Nothing says less work like a potluck, fey folk. I for one start to crave healthier eating at this time of year like nobody's business. Make it a salad dish to pass theme.
