Tarot Magick for the New Year
There are many tarot spreads and techniques that we use to make predictions for the coming year. We can also use tarot magick to create the coming year.
You can incorporate this tarot magick technique into any kind of ritual, or simply perform it as a magickal working on its own.
While those who follow the Wheel of the Year celebrate October 31st as the ending of the old year and the beginning of the new, many of us also celebrate the calendar New Year as well. This magickal working is appropriate for either New Year celebration, or both.
First, remove the Hermit and the Sun from your deck. These cards have a specific place in the ritual. In this magickal working the Hermit and the Sun represent the old year and the new year, respectively.
Did you know that in the original tarot the Hermit carried an hourglass instead of a lantern? That image became the image of "Father Time." Father Time is often used to represent the old year in popular iconography. Usually the new year is represented by a bright young child, so we will use the Sun.
The purpose of this magick is two-fold. First we will release the old year so we can start fresh in the new year. Then we will do magick to manifest what we want in the new year.
To begin, create your sacred space. Think about what you would like to banish from your life in the new year. What things would you like to lay to rest? What baggage would you prefer not to take into the next year?
Look through your tarot cards (minus the Hermit and the Sun) and cognitively choose cards to represent these things; the things you are ready to put to rest. Choose as many cards as you like, and put them in a pile. We'll call this the "Old Year Pile." Place this pile face side down with the Hermit on top, face side up.
Now look through your remaining cards and find cards that represent what you want to manifest in the coming year. What do you want to accomplish in the next twelve months? What do you want to make happen? What do you want your year to look like? Take these cards and place them in a pile we'll the "New Year Pile." Place this pile face side up with the Sun on top, also face side up.
Pick up the Old Year Pile and look at the Hermit. Say an invocation such as this.
"I call on the wisdom of the Hermit to help me know that it is time to release that which I no longer need, and that which no longer serves me."
Now go through the cards of the Old Year Pile, one at a time. As you look at each one, say what it represents and place it face down, back into its pile. When you look at the card and speak aloud what you are releasing do it with the full force and focus of your emotions. When you place each card face down know that as you release it from your sight and from your hand you are indeed releasing it from your life.
Now place the Hermit back on top of the pile, but this time face down. Hold the palm of your left hand over the Old Year Pile. Feel the wisdom of the Hermit and the absence of the energies you have just banished.
Now turn your attention to the New Year Pile. Pick up the pile and look at the Sun. Say an invocation such as this.
"I embody the warmth, the joy and the youthful enthusiasm of the Sun. I look to the dawn without fear."
Now look through these cards that you have chosen to manifest your new year. Hold them and breathe them in, visualizing your year the way you want it to be. Feel the joy these energies will bring you.
Once you have done this to your satisfaction take each card, look at it and say aloud what you want the card to bring to you. Place each card face up, either in a row or a circle, or back in a pile if you are short of space. When you look at each card and speak about it make sure you feel the energy it is bringing you. As you place it down visualize that you are sending that energy into the universe to do your bidding.
Close the ritual in whatever way is comfortable for you. When you release the sacred space you may shuffle your cards back together. Know that you have done powerful work to release the old and to create the new!
May 2013 be a year of wisdom, joy and magick for you!
