The Tarot Magick of Reversals

Not every tarot reader works with reversed cards. For those who do, there is a simple opportunity to add a bit of tarot magick to your divination work.

In both divination and magick, I like to think of card reversal as changing the energy of the card. The reversal may lessen the card’s energy, it may put the card’s energy in the past, or it may create healing from the energy of the card. A reversal may show a reluctance to accept the card’s energy, or that the cards energy is needed, but lacking.

A tarot reading can very accurately reflect a specific situation. A reversed card can suggest a specific focus for action and intention. This takes tarot reading to a new level. Not only do we see what is, we are able to be proactive and make appropriate changes.

To start incorporating reversal magick in your tarot readings, simply think about how reversals change a card’s energy.

For example, the Ace of Wands reversed might suggest fatigue, lack of ambition, lack of excitement or lack of inspiration.   If you receive this card in a reading to describe your current state, here are three things you can do with it to literally turn things around.

1.       Consciously turn the card right-side-up. As you do, invite its energy into your life.

2.       Make a conscious decision to nurture the energy of this card in your life. You can do that in mundane ways and in magickal ways.

3.       Perform a separate divination on questions generated by the reversal. For example in the case of the Ace of Wands, ask “How can I bring more fire energy into my life?”

Sometimes cards will present right-side-up, but you will want to reverse them to consciously put their energy in the past, or to manifest healing from their energy. For instance, reversing the Three of Swords can allow and encourage healing from sorrow, heartache or betrayal.

Next time you perform a divination with tarot, consider taking the next step. Use your power to consciously change the energy of a card by reversing it.
