Goddess Centered Practice
In the woods behind my house rest a collection of nine large flat rocks. Daily, I walk down to these “priestess rocks” for some sacred time alone to pray, meditate, consider, and be. Often, while in this space, I open my mouth and poetry comes out. I’ve come to see this experience as "theapoetics"—experiencing the Goddess through direct “revelation,” framed in language. As Stanley Hopper originally described in the 1970’s, it is possible to “…replace theology, the rationalistic interpretation of belief, with theopoetics, finding God[dess] through poetry and fiction, which neither wither before modern science nor conflict with the complexity of what we know now to be the self.” Theapoetics might also be described, “as a means of engaging language and perception in such a way that one enters into a radical relation with the divine, the other, and the creation in which all occurs.”
Everyday Blessings
“May the great mystery make sunrise in your heart.”
—Sioux blessing quoted in Meditations for Living in Balance
This picture was actually taken nearing sunset, but it matches the spirit of this quote for me and the experience of allowing ourselves permission and space to be blessed by the world around us. As I looked up from closing to the gate at the river land, seeing these fingers of sunlight and the sparkle on the water was a blessing to me.
The author of the book of meditations in which I found this quote, Anne Wilson Schaef, goes on to note:
“Blessings give us images to fill the voids caused by the wear and tear of the world. Blessings are a very easy and inexpensive way to pass around great treasures. Blessings lighten us and fill us at the same time, while demanding nothing from us in return.”
What blessings have you received recently?
What blessings are you offering or could you offer?
What blessings might be right there in front of you, if you pause to pay attention?
