WEATHER SHAMANISM: HARMONIZING OUR CONNECTION WITH THE ELEMENTS
BY NAN MOSS AND DAVID CORBIN BEAR & COMPANY, 2008

The weather, as you may have noticed, is getting pretty intense. Tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards and ice-storms all have been rocking our communities worldwide over the past few years, and they show no signs of diminishing. With some notable (and ridiculous) exceptions, most people now acknowledge that global climate change is partly responsible for this increase in climate disasters and intense weather events. Those of us who practice a spirituality that calls for authentic relationships with the elements of nature are seeking ways to dance with these changes and find ways to strengthen these relationships. It is more than timely now that Nan Moss and David Corbin present us with Weather Shamanism, a book geared towards the spiritual understanding of weather and inspiring others to communicate with the neglected and intensely powerful spirits of sky, wind, cloud, rain, hail and snow that rule our lives in ways we have forgotten how to understand, or even acknowledge.

WITCH SCHOOL: FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD DEGREE LESSONS IN THE CORRELLIAN TRADITION
REV. DONAL LEWIS-HIGHCORRELL LLEWELLYN, 2008

Witch School was founded online (as witchschool.com) in 2001 by the Correllian Nativist Tradition, which was itself founded in 1879. Originally a family tradition, in 1979 the decision was made to open the tradition to the public via a series of correspondence lessons created (in part) by the Rev. Don Lewis.

In my opinion, it is important to see the Correllian Nativist Tradition and Witchschool.com as two entirely separate entities, because although the Tradition founded the School, the latter has almost nothing to do with the Tradition. Witchschool is very popular; the School claims more than 200,000 students, making it (to my knowledge) the largest occult organization in the history of modern Paganism. Although these books are labeled WitchSchool, it would be more accurate to say they are “Correllian Nativist” as the lessons are the public documentation of this Tradition’s teachings.

At Court and Cauldron: The Music of Les Witches

The King of Denmark leaps to a galliard. Lords and ladies revel at a masque in the courtly theater of Renaissance England. Ophelia sings a love song. The cauldron bubbles. The criminal and the persecuted, en route to the gallows, sing “Fortune my Foe,” a melancholy, beautiful tune which has become an early music hit. It is the title tune of this CD — music of Shakespeare’s time, brought to you from France by Les Witches.

On harpsichord, lute, violin, and recorder, Les Witches recreate this music with invention and sizzle. We cannot know exactly how the music was originally performed. It made its way around Europe, its itinerant existence hastened when Queen Elizabeth decided to ban independent musicians. Lyrics changed regularly, ballads became dances, and courtly music became country music (and vice versa).

TALKING ABOUT THE ELEPHANT: AN ANTHOLOGY OF NEOPAGAN PERSPECTIVES ON CULTURAL APPROPRIATION

Edited by Lupa,

Megalithica Books, 2008

When that pale-skinned 4th-Degree Celto-Cherokee Rasta-Peyote Shamanic Witch invokes Erzulie to power chakra crystals for her tantric yoga class, she's indulging in a common but obnoxious practice: cultural appropriation. You may not have heard the term, but you've seen it in action. Most of the New Age movement — hell, most of civilization — is built upon it. Although a certain degree is inevitable when cultures meld, it can get out of hand… and often does.

In 2002, six years ago, Christopher Penczak gave us the first installment in his Temple of Witchcraft series and with volumes 1 and 2 of The Living Temple of Witchcraft: Mystery, Ministry, and the Magickal Life he completes the cycle. I’ve reviewed most of this series and am frankly running out of new ways to say “this is great!’”

TRAVELS THROUGH MIDDLE EARTH

Travels through Middle Earth:
The Path of a Saxon Pagan

Alaric Albertsson, Llewellyn, 2009

In The Path of a Saxon Pagan, Alaric Albertsson decides to share his experiences and his beliefs of this Anglo-Saxon tradition relative to his personal path instead of speaking for all Anglo-Saxon Pagans, and he does this quite marvelously. Travels provides an introduction and more into Anglo-Saxon Heathenry today, while still honoring and reflecting on the contributions of the ancestors and the journeys through Middle Earth, and the other realms and customs within the fyrn sidu, or the “old ways.”

Gypsy Nomads - At the Carnival Eclectique

At the Carnival Eclectique
Gypsy Nomads, 2009

Heartbeats and thoughts. Pulses and arpeggios. Drums and guitar with brief hints of vocals. Such is the music of The Gypsy Nomads, “a New York duo” with decidedly international fl air. Their latest album, At the Carnival Electique, blends solid beats with fleeting flourishes, and while the results are playful and deceptively lightweight, the band's appeal creeps up on you and doesn't let go.
