It's the Full Moon, Charlie Brown

"Augh!"

With his hands on his head, Charlie Brown groaned.

"Isn't there anyone who knows what witchcraft is all about?"

In the silence that followed, it was Linus that spoke.

"Sure, Charlie Brown. I can tell you what witchcraft is all about."

He walked to the center of the stage. "Lights, please?"

The lights in the auditorium dimmed. From the spotlight's magic circle, he spoke.

Whenever you have need of anything,

once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full,

then shall ye assemble in some secret place

to adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of All Witcheries.

There shall ye assemble, ye who are feign to sorcery,

but have not won its deepest secrets;

to these shall I teach such things as are yet unknown.

Ye shall be free from slavery.

And as a sign that ye be truly free, ye shall be naked in your rites.

And ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music, and love,

all in my praise.

He turned toward his friend.

"That's it, Charlie Brown," he said.

"That's what witchcraft is all about."

For Mara of Rowan Dream

You said it first, and you were right:

There's no witchcraft without the Moon.

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.

Compare the magic of the Moon to that of the Horns?

You really don't believe in asking the small questions, do you?
For now, let me say that I think we'll find much to say on the question if we ask how men's and women's magics differ, and what they share.
And I promise to return to the topic.
    Soon.

Don't you think it's awfully reductionist to conflate gods with gendered approaches to magic?
