Winter Moons

Winter Moons

What do you get when you cross an Israeli, an Ojibway, and a truckload of electronic equipment?

Give up?

It’s called Winter Moons, the second release by Canadian group Spirit Nation.

Vocalist Tamara Podemski is half Ojibway and half Israeli; her haunting voice floats through this album like a ghost stroking your spine. Podemski composed all of the lyrics, including traditional Ojibway prayers and chants. The language slips between English, Hebrew and Ojibway smoothly.

The songs include an ode to Podemski’s unusual heritage, a tobacco prayer, a lullaby, and condensed versions of various Ojibway creation stories. Track three, “We Are Still Here,” is particularly moving and poignant. The lyrics and vocals of this album are above repute, and the music is certainly done well enough to support them.
