New Moon Astrology: Co-creating with the Rhythms of Luna

The New Moon is a time for initiating and planting seeds in our lives; it is a symbolic time of personal rebirth. Metaphorically, it is the time of the Maiden, the new, fresh outgoing energy of the Triple Goddess. It's the optimum time to birth new intentions, set plans in motion, and state new goals. While the Moon is still dark (not visible) our seedling intentions can be nurtured and their roots can be strengthened. This blog will address the New Moon each month from an Astrological perspective, and how you can co-create with the natural rhythms to manifest your highest intent. Each Moon will correspond to a Guiding Goddess Archetype that resonates with the current astrological energies.

New Moon in Libra: The Goddess of Love Herself

The New Moon this month occurs in the sign of Libra (1° 08') on Tuesday September 23rd, at 11:14 pm (PDT).  Libra is the archetype of the Goddess of Love Herself, and is associated with the planet/goddess Venus.  Libra is a Cardinal Air sign, meaning it is a sign that begins a season; a gateway into the journey of a new chapter that resonates with the objective, intellectual element of Air.  Libra season begins with the Autumn Equinox, or Mabon, as it is called in some Wiccan communities.

Libra is concerned with seeking balance, and of relationships of all kinds; from interpersonal relationships, to the relationships between line and color, and form and function.  Many Libras have a decidedly artistic bent, and an eye for proportion and detail.  This eye for relationship between the sum of many parts can be found in the writer, artist, designer, therapist, or lover.  This sensibility and need for equilibrium also shows up in the peacemaker, the negotiator, and the lawyer or judge.  Many Astrology sources will talk about Libra’s famous vanity, or superficiality, and go on about how this is the guy or gal who always smells good, or won’t leave the house unless impeccably dressed.  Personally, I think this falls under the category of pop Astrology, and it doesn’t explain why some Libras might appear obsessed with appearances.  It all stems from that need to balance, to attain a certain harmony or symmetry.  Notice that Libra is trying to find balance, or the right combination of things.  That doesn’t mean he or she always achieves it. It is the pursuit of the ideal, and that can be a very abstract concept to wrap one’s head around.

Sometimes one with strong Libra in their chart goes overboard in his or her pursuit of chasing the ideal.  I have seen some Libras who are the epitome of style and elegance, and I have also encountered a few who in attempting to reach some internal measuring stick, have gone past style and taste and into the realm of excessive plastic surgery and way too much perfume.  The scales have lost their objectivity and are swinging wildly, attempting to correct course.  This also goes for Libra’s other infamous and oft quoted “attributes”: charm, politeness and abhorrence of discord.   Yes, there are some Librans who go out of their way to not rock the boat, at the expense of their own boundaries, preferences, and personal feelings.  But all of the sweet self-effacing smiles in the world cannot expel the demons of sacrificing Self.  It all has to go somewhere.  So, it gets relegates to the Shadow of the psyche, where it becomes resentment, waiting to be released at a more opportune time. Then you get the classic sublimation of anger that erupts at the worse possible time at the person who deserves it the least, and has no idea why they’re being picked on, yelled at, or generally dissed.   Even worse, stuffing anger, disappointment or betrayal can lead to health issues.  Of course, there are individuals who are living out the shadow side of any sign.  Libra has to remember that if their quest for harmony, peace and balance is to be realized, it starts first with Self.  They must reflect on the truth that maintaining healthy boundaries and learning that expressing displeasure or even righteous anger ultimately creates the very harmony they seek.  Libra is blessed with a certain objective detachment that allows them to tend towards fairness instead of personal emotional bias, and Libra plays the Devil’s Advocate better than any other sign.

Every New Moon is Unique

Although once a year, the New Moon occurs in each sign, every New Moon is absolutely unique.  Yes, this New Moon is in Libra, but it is a totally different Moon than the New Moon in Libra last year.  This particular New Moon is not making any major aspects to any planets, which feels like a kind of break, a time of gentle comfort in which to reflect and exhale.

Guiding Goddess Archetype

Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty exemplifies the sign of Libra.  But lest you think she is all sugar and spice, when we actually read the texts, we get a much more complex archetype.  Other goddesses that resonate with Libra are the even more ancient Mesopotamian/Sumerian versions of the goddess of love, Inanna/Ishtar.  It’s of interest to note that Inanna/Ishtar was the patroness of both love and war, thus alluding to the dual nature of love and the inherent conflict that can result in the pursuit of equilibrium.  The Hindu goddess Lakshmi also embodies many Libran attributes.

 New Moon in Libra Affirmations

  • I am honest about my own needs, and honor my Self, my feelings, preferences and boundaries, while also taking into consideration the needs of others
  • I am a creative being with a flair for artistic expression
  • I put my best foot forward everyday.  I look and feel great on my own terms, not a preconceived ideal
  • I cultivate deep relationship with others that feeds me on all levels

New Moon in Libra Ritual

Since it's difficult to mention Libra without also talking about love and relationship, this Libra New Moon ritual is about just that. This ritual can be done whether you are a unattached person looking for "The One", or a partnered person wanting to forge a deeper connection with your loved one.  This ritual can be done anytime, but is especially potent during the New Moon in Libra, and up to three days after.

What You Will Need

Small pink or green candle (associated with the heart energy)

Small rose quartz crystal

Paper and pen

Clear your space with sage or cedar.  Cast a circle if you wish. Ground and center.  Light the candle. Hold the rose quartz in your hands and gaze into the flame, allowing yourself to visualize the essence of what qualities you desire in relationship.  If you are single, avoid focusing on a specific person, no matter how hard the temptation.  It's been said many times in many places, but it bears repeating: trying to do a "love spell" on  someone in particular works against free will (theirs) and often does not turn out the way you intended.  You may think he or she is the love of your life, but just hasn't realized it yet - and perhaps that is true - but if they are, you don't need to draw them to you with a spell. The "Be careful what you wish for, cause you just may get it" adage is more than a quaint old saying.  Stories abound of the erstwhile lover drawing to them the person of their desires, only to find out too late, that said dream-person comes with some pretty hefty deal breakers.  That charming, gorgeous guy you met in London is a clinical narcissist, and really couldn't care less how your day went.  That beautiful, engaging woman you see on the elevator each morning hates your dog, and plots to rid you of it now that you're a couple.  If you are head over heels in "love" with someone unobtainable, you might be projecting.  Check out the amazing book: "We" Understanding the Psychology of Romantic Love, by Robert Johnson, and put your pain in perspective.

Instead, write on your paper the essence of the qualities in a mate you want to draw to you.  If it turns out that said person resonates with what you are looking for in your heart of hearts, perhaps it is meant to be.  Let the candle burn out beside your list of intentions.  Put the quartz on the paper, and let the energy build.  Leave it over night, and in the morning, tuck the list of intentions away somewhere you won't see it for awhile.  Carry the rose quartz close to your body, in a pouch, your wallet, or tucked inside your bra.  Trust that the perfect person for you is on his or her way.  Act in accordance, and get ready for love, spruce yourself up - inside and out - and expect magic.
