Ass's Ears

 'Tis a fine, foolish thing to wear a crown.

(Proverb of New Crete)

Sometimes Old Hornie wears an ass's ears.

Tomorrow is Thirteenth Night, the last of Yule, when the Merry Monarch of Misrule holds sway.

It's a short reign, but a merry one.

Pour the liquor, spread the board: one final feasting before the end.

Lean times are coming, coming soon. A winter of discomfort and austerity lies ahead.

So fill your belly now, and drink until you reel.

For the Lord of Misrule wields his bauble-scepter and wears his ass-ear crown for but a brief time more.

And then we kill him.

Bold Yuletide is past;

Thirteenth Night is the last.

So we bid you adieu:

great joy to the New!

Above: Nigel Jackson, Misrule!

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.
