Pagan News Beagle: Faithful Friday, August 18 2017

What would Jesus think of modern Christians? A look at the role "surrender" plays in Hinduism. And talking about Buddhism with the writer behind Dear White People. It's Faithful Friday, our segment on news about faiths and religious communities around the world! All this and more for the Pagan News Beagle!

Undoubtedly many politicians in the West, especially here in America, like to appeal to their Christian religion. But what would Jesus think about modern politics? According to Brad Chilcott, he wouldn't be much of a fan.

What's it like growing up Hindu? What are the challenges and blessings? Over at Patheos, Amber Choate reviews one children's book aimed at just that question.

Surrender is often a scary concept. It takes a lot of courage to let go of your control. But according to Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswamiit's also an essential part of all the yogas (in Hinduism, yoga refers to the various different paths to liberation or "moksha").

Fundamentalist Christians often talk about the sanctity of life as a reason to oppose abortion. Unfortunately, whether or not you agree with that concept conservative attitudes towards sexuality also often mean that young Evangelical women who find themselves pregnant are put in a particularly tough spot. Forbidden from seeking an abortion they nonetheless are in many cases shamed and ostracized for keeping their child.

Dear White People has been another hit among many for Netflix, exploring the concept of race and how it affects our relationships with one another. But while Dear White People is often thought of as a "black" show it's rare you'll hear it described as "Buddhist." But in fact, according to its creator, the religion's ethos is important to the show's core.

Aryós Héngwis (or the more modest Héngwis for short) is a native of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, born some 5000 years ago, near the village of Dereivka. In his youth he stood out from the other snakes for his love of learning and culture, eventually coming into the service of the local reǵs before moving westward toward Europe. Most recently, Aryós Héngwis left his home to pursue a new life in America, where he has come under the employ of BBI Media as an internet watchdog (or watchsnake, if you will), ever poised to strike the unwary troll.
