Pagan News Beagle: Watery Wednesday, May 4

Is there anything Pagans can learn from Christian fundamentalists? What can the superhero Deadpool teach Pagans about heroism and the cult surrounding it? And just what are Heathen holidays anyway? It's Watery Wednesday, our weekly segment on news about the Pagan community! All this and more for the Pagan News Beagle!

Fundamentalism may be something of a trigger word among Pagans. But is there anything Pagans can learn from Christians who espouse it? In particular, can we learn from their mistakes? John Beckett offers food for thought at Patheos.

By this point there's no two ways about it: Deadpool is one of Marvel's most popular supeheroes. But is there anything useful he can offer to the Pagan community beyond fun entertainment? P. Sufenas Virius Lupus thinks there might be.

Doreen Valiente was one of the legendary founding mothers of the modern Pagan movement. In her first article for The Wild Hunt, Claire Dixon explains just what made Valiente special and how her contributions shaped modern Paganism.

Beltane, also known as Walpurgisnacht, is now past but that doesn't mean we still can't share our personal stories about it. G. B Marian, Seth worshiper and Pagan blogger, writes about what makes the holiday special to him and how he's celebrated it in the past.

Considering the wide array of traditions that have fed into modern Paganism it's sometimes unclear which holidays "belong" to whom. Which holidays are "Heathen" for example? Hüginn's Heathen Hof explains the history of the sacred calendar in Germanic polytheism.

Aryós Héngwis (or the more modest Héngwis for short) is a native of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, born some 5000 years ago, near the village of Dereivka. In his youth he stood out from the other snakes for his love of learning and culture, eventually coming into the service of the local reǵs before moving westward toward Europe. Most recently, Aryós Héngwis left his home to pursue a new life in America, where he has come under the employ of BBI Media as an internet watchdog (or watchsnake, if you will), ever poised to strike the unwary troll.
