August 6: Festival for Thoth, the very great, in the whole country

The start of the Egyptian year was the First month of the Inundation (named Dhwty) and was a time of great celebration, coinciding with the rising of the Nile. “You shall follow Thoth, on that beautiful day of the start of Inundation.”
During this month there were three festivals for Thoth, held on the 4th, 19th and 21st. Entries from various calendars give the following descriptions of these feast days. 4th day - a “Festival of Thoth”. 19th day - a “Festival for Thoth, the very great, in the whole country”. [...] 21st day - a festival to “celebrate ‘the triumph of Thoth’ in the presence of Re”. [...]
Bomhard suggests that the first day of the new year, which coincided with the rising of Sirius, was the 19th July.
This would give the festivals in Dhwty the following modern dates; the 4th as the 22nd of July, the 19th and 21st as the 6th and 8th of August and the 26th as the 13th of August.  (Quoted from: -- Lesley Jackson "Thoth, the history of Ancient-Egyptian God of Wisdom)

For this festival day, I'd like to share some of my devotional poetry...

***

hail to you
Djehuty thrice-great, lord of Khemennu
uncreated, who made the world into being
as the word of Ptah and will of Atum
who witnessed the birth of sun
on the top of the hill of the Ogdoad

my heart longs for you
your city is in rejoice
when you come into it
let me praise you
at day at night
you, master of the divine book
who measured the sky and earth
let me follow you
whereever you go
protect me and vindicate against my enemies

make me justified
before the tribunal of any god and goddess
let them all say, she is without fault
so my water and bread will be pure
one that comes from your altar
let me come to the beautiful west
to the abode of pure souls
to dwell with ones who love you

you, the well of the desert for those who thirst
consolation of sorrows
inventor of speech
lord of many graces
let me know all your holy names
written in my heart
let me know you and adore you in all your holy forms
so I may make the glorifications
of the secrets of Thoth

Every day, every hour - always so beautiful in approaching You…
Why sometimes I simply want to cry in excitement "Thoth, I love You?"
It's so simple and so amazing and so wonderful -
To live in endless adoration before God,
Thinking about him every moment, and about his love, and again and again
And burn in the flames of love, divine love and devotion to him,
When my heart freezes in awe and I can't find more words
And he says “Sing me praise” - and there’s nothing of my own will anymore, but only his…
And I start whispering these hymns and prayers, again and again,
Repeating holy names and fragments of ancient praises,
I keep silence, but really, I want to cry out, and scream
Out of ecstasy,  out of love which overflows me,
And I want to speak of him to the fish in the waters and to birds in the sky…

How sweet is my madness of love, Thoth-Djehuty, one of fair countenance,
I want to give you my soul as a gift every day,
And give you my heart in exchange for your smile,
And follow you -
Always,
Wherever you go,
And adore you,
Now and forever, in eternity everlasting, and every new day,
In eternity which begins today…
To live for you,
To become one of the stones in the foundation of your temple in Hermopolis.

My mouth was opened by you, to make you glorifications,
Here are my arms, to bring you sacred gifts and offerings,
Here are my feet, to follow your ways forever,
Here are my eyes, to admire your beauty,
Here are my ears, to listen to the wisdom of your divine utterances
And listen to praises that are sung in your glory.

Forever and ever,
Djehuty, my God most beautiful, one who resides in my heart,
One who helms the barque of my life over his waters,
How beautiful is your love,
How beautiful are your blessings,
How beautiful is your service,
How beautiful it is, to live for you
You say my name, so I may live
Djed-Djehuty-iuf-ankh-et
To be with you forever,
To serve Djehuty in eternity,
Joining my voice with the choir of blessed souls
Who sing you hymns in the Mansion of the Moon…

Born in USSR and living in St. Petersburg, Russia; my spiritual journey started when I was a young teen. After more than 20 years of being practicing Russian Orthodox and later, Roman Catholic, I followed my heart always calling me to honor the Gods of Ancient Egypt. My devotion belongs to Thoth-Hermes-Djehuty, Thrice Greatest, Lord of Khemenu (Hermopolis), and I try to serve him as a priestess (hmt-Ntr). My path is independent, solitary and not hardcore reconstructionist, and I don’t belong to organized Kemetic temples.I studied biology in University, but after graduation, for many years have been working in telecommunications and computer networking. Now I work in international trade; but this is what I do “for a living”, as I’m poet and writer before all. I write poetry and prose since early childhood (of course, my writings are mostly in Russian) and I have some published books, science-fiction novels and poetry. I follow hermetic philosophy and viewpoints, and my interests, besides Ancient Egypt, include medieval history and art, Spiritual Alchemy, traveling around the world, translating books from English and studying more foreign languages (including Egyptian hieroglyphics). I am also president of the St. Petersburg chapter of the International Alchemy Guild.
