Novel Gnosis part 17: Jord

Jord, pronounced Yord, rhymes with horde, is the mother of Thor. Her name means earth.

Jord goes by her alternate name in the Fireverse and is part of the twin pair Fjorgyn and Fjorgynn. The name Fjorgynn is linguistically related to the names of thunder gods in other Indo-European cultures.

She became Thor’s mother before Odin married Frigga, who is the daughter of the male half of the twin pair, and thus her niece. As part of the plot of the novel, Odin convinces her to let him bring Thor to be raised in Asgard because in Asgard he will be uncommonly large and strong, but Thor was old enough at that point that it was obvious he was not going to grow up to giant size. So, Thor goes to be raised by Odin and Frigga, who is both Thor’s stepmother and his aunt.

In the Fireverse, Thor is descended from a noble house of storm giants through his mother, and at one point in the story Loki gets him to try to become the king of Jotunheim. It's part of the lead up to Ragnarok. There is nothing in the Lore about Thor being eligible for that throne, and also nothing in the lore about Thor and Loki being descended from the same noble house. This is story plot stuff. Still, there is an obvious relationship between Thor's powers and the powers of a storm giant.
