Gnosis Diary: Life as a Heathen
My personal experiences, including religious and spiritual experiences, community interaction, general heathenry, and modern life on my heathen path, which is Asatru.
Raising a Glass for Kveldulf
Kveldulf Gundarsson aka Dr. Stephen Grundy aka Sigmundr Hawkonson has gone to stay with the ancestors. As reported on social media and on various news sites, he died suddenly a week ago.
In a public post, Kveldulf's wife Melodi has announced a worldwide public event, Lift Your Glass, for the evening of October 8th, 2021. It's not an online meeting, there is nothing to join or post, one just raises a toast.
I first met Kveldulf in the early 90s when we both attended a Ring of Troth festival campout in Northern California, where I used to live. Even though he wrote some important Asatru books, and more recently when we became casual Facebook friends we had some interesting conversations online, the image I can't get out of my head tonight is when some fellow campers tied Kveldulf's spear in a tree and then the park ranger showed up. It's odd what memory does sometimes. I just keep picturing the spear in the tree and can't get it out of my head.
So I'm giving the mental image to all of you, my readers. A wooden spear with a metal spearhead, tied point down in a big leafy tree, the natural colored ropes going every which way like the web of a spider on too much caffeine, holding it motionless in the salt sea breeze. It's a memory about Kveldulf, but Kveldulf isn't in it. He isn't even there. He isn't there.

I know that one of Odin's titles was Lord of the Spear, and that he hung himself on Yggdrasil for 9 days. By any chance was Kveldulf dedicated to Odin?
