CPAP Machines, Meditation, Dr. Who and the Nature of Reality

When you get older and your doctor says you should start using a CPAP machine, don't take it as a failure. Embrace the opportunity; your CPAP may actually provide some of the same benefits as meditation, albeit through a somewhat different mechanism.

As your brain absorbs a higher percentage of oxygen while it's asleep and dreaming, it may realize clearer insights into the nature of reality.

A brilliant insight into the nature of dying is portrayed in the Dr. Who episode where David Tennant's Doctor changes into Matt Smith's Doctor. David's Doctor is afraid; he says, “I don't want to die.” But he has to go through that transition anyway; nobody can escape it. When it's done, he has changed into someone else – someone who, though different, is every bit as alive and wonderful. Matter changes into energy. Energy changes back into matter. Nothing is ever lost.

This is what the Buddha realized as he sat beneath the Bodhi tree. Everything in life is real, for a period of time. Then it changes into something different - which is also real, for its period of time.

Sometimes a person will turn into someone else while still in the same body, due to a medical condition or psychic disturbance. Each personality possesses its own reality, for as long as it manifests.

If this happens to someone you know, respect the feelings and the viewpoint of the personality who is real for now. You, too, will go through many changes as you experience the multitudinous adventures of life. When you come right down to it, we are all Time Lords like Dr. Who!  Maybe we can't go back into the past, but our potential for the future has no limits.
