PaganNewsBeagle Faithful Friday Nov 21

Today's Faithful Friday edition celebrates the many religions of our world. This week, we've got legendary women of Germanic Yuletide; "pagan" traveler portraits; ancient religions of the MidEast; is religion inherently violent; faith-free ritual.

Germanic female figures of the Yuletide holidays are featured in this post. How many are you familiar with? Do your holiday traditions include any of these customs?

This gallery of images features portraits of the counterculture "travelers" of the UK. Do you have any experience with traveler culture?

Many ancient religions are disappearing from the Middle East. This article offers a closer look at the Yazidis, a Kurdish sect recently targeted by the Islamic State; the Mandaeans, who cast magic spells passed down since the Babylonians; and the Druze, a group of philosopher-mystics in Israel and the Levant.

Is religion inherently violent (as atheist Richard Dawkins has vehemently argued)? Salon reviews Karen Armstrong's new book "Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence."

Is ritual possible (or useful) without engaging in a faith/religious experience. In this guest post (on Jason Mankey's blog) atheist Jeff Raymond advocates for ritual, even in the absence of a religious framework. Have you ever done a "faith-free" ritual?
