New Moon Astrology: Co-creating with the Rhythms of Luna

The New Moon is a time for initiating and planting seeds in our lives; it is a symbolic time of personal rebirth. Metaphorically, it is the time of the Maiden, the new, fresh outgoing energy of the Triple Goddess. It's the optimum time to birth new intentions, set plans in motion, and state new goals. While the Moon is still dark (not visible) our seedling intentions can be nurtured and their roots can be strengthened. This blog will address the New Moon each month from an Astrological perspective, and how you can co-create with the natural rhythms to manifest your highest intent. Each Moon will correspond to a Guiding Goddess Archetype that resonates with the current astrological energies.

New Moon in Gemini: Radical Experimentation and Wild Imaginings

This morning, May 28th at 11:40 am (PDT) the New Moon in Gemini occurs, hovering for less than a moment in that space between breaths, and begins waxing even before she is visible in the heavens.  Gemini energy encourages us toward radical experimentation and wild imaginings.   We have the urge to get up and go, and explore new ideas, terrains, and paradigms.

Gemini is a mutable air sign, and as such is connected to the realm of the mind.  Gemini is associated with imagination, communication, language, culture, the Internet, and study. Because it is a mutable sign, it bridges one season into the next, and connects ideas, people, and things.

This particular New Moon makes a square with Neptune, with the Sun also squaring Neptune just a few hours later, lending a rather mystical bent to the unfolding energy.  There is a fantasy element that is woven into the threads of the intentions we set today; a little bit of faery magick that stirs our curiosity about what is possible.  Use your intuition to feel for the seeds of what comes next.

There is wisdom in the patterns of the Universe: although Gemini usually moves like quicksilver, the strong Neptune vibe tempers its spirited impulsiveness, and urges us to reflect, dream, and imagine the possibilities – all things that will stand us in good stead as Mercury (Gemini’s ruling planet) slows down and goes retrograde throughout June.

It is true that we have collectively been through some bone shaking, teeth clenching astrology as of late.  April’s Cardinal Grand Cross was a crossroads; a catalyst that forced many into a new world, whether we were ready or not.  And, although May has been gentler, the Scorpio Full Moon on May 15th took some of us through a thunderstorm of emotional undercurrents that led to a pilgrimage through the underworld of our own psyches.

Thankfully, the lighthearted charm of Gemini clears the air like an apple blossom scented spring breeze.  Gemini season is flirtatious, effervescent, curious, youthful and vivacious.  And, although Mercury is backtracking from June 7th until July 1st, the carefree light touch of Gemini helps us to shrug our shoulders with an insouciant joie de vivre and go with the flow with the inevitable communication glitches that come with most Mercury retrogrades.

Guiding Goddess Archetypes

Gemini is the Shapeshifter, the walker between the worlds.  Gemini plays with ideas and gender roles, and questions entrenched beliefs.  Associated with the androgynous god Hermes, the psychopomp who could move between the worlds, the Gemini archetype evades definition by polarity, and instead chooses to dance in the liminal spaces in between.  Gemini encourages trying on different personas, and imagining new possibilities with self expression.  Goddesses associated with Gemini are: Rhiannon, Blodeuwedd, Melissa, Psyche, Hina, Saraswati, and Butterfly Woman.

  • My curiosity enlivens me

  • I detach myself from limiting beliefs
  • I am a multifaceted, limitless being
  • I choose not to define myself by anyone’s definition but my own
  • I am lighthearted and eternally youthful

New Moon in Gemini Ritual: Shifting Shape – Mirror Gazing

This is a meditation that I stumbled upon unexpectedly as a little girl. Mirror gazing is a form of scrying; a meditation to see the many facets of who we are, who we have been, and even alternate Selves.  It is amazing to see our many sides, like the myriad faces of a faceted crystal.  It can be uncanny however, and some may not feel ready to gaze into the mirror, as it can be an unnerving experience.  Go slow, and if you find yourself feeling uncomfortable, simply turn on the lights, and stand up.  You will be gazing at your own face for a minimum of 10-20 minutes.  Once you are in a light trance state, you will begin to see your face changing.  Some individuals have reported seeing the faces of past incarnations, including different races, genders, and ages.  Occasionally, a face can appear that may look weird or frightening.  Try and remember that this is a facet of your shadow self.  Again, if you feel uncomfortable for any reason, you can stop at any time.  Try and come to it with a spirit of curiosity.

What You Will Need

  • Sage or cedar for smudging
  • 2 Candles
  • Mirror
  • Pen and paper
  • Your favorite meditation music

What You Do

  •  Find a time when you will be uninterrupted.
  • Smudge yourself and your ritual area.  Do some Savitri breathing to ground and center yourself.  (Breathe in to the count of seven.  Hold for the count of seven. Out for the count of seven.  Repeat as long as you wish, but at least three times).
  • Light the candles
  • Draw your circle (or sphere of protection) around you as in all ritual activity
  • Sit comfortably before a full length mirror
  • Gaze into the mirror, and allow your vision to become soft
  • Try to avoid blinking, as this will enhance your inner vision
  • Allow the images to come and go

Afterwards, ground yourself again, stand up, stretch, and turn to your notebook.  Record any impressions you may have received. Perhaps there is a message or messages from one of your aspects of Self that you need to hear right now. Affirm to yourself that you are a multifaceted being, and that you can tap into myriad experience and wisdom at any time. The whole idea of this exercise is to play with rigid definitions of Self, and to realize how fluid those definitions can be.
