New Moon, New Friends

When I moved to San Francisco, I didn’t know a soul, but I used this tried-and-true trick to fill my life with friends.

On the first Friday after a new moon (Freya’s Day, which is ruled by Venus, is ideal for fun, love, flirtation, gossip, and good times), light amber incense. Anoint yourself with amber oil and dance around, arms flung out and upward. Say aloud:

I call upon you, friend Freya,
to fill my life with live and joy. I call upon you,
Goddess, to bring unto me that which I enjoy
in the form of people, wise and kind.
This I ask and give thanks for; blessed be.

Anointing the Temple of Love: A Bed Blessing
Anoint your bed with this special charm:
  • Red cup or gothic goblet
  • Jasmine and rose essential oils

In your goblet, mix a half-teaspoon of jasmine oil and a half-teaspoon of rose oil. Hold it with both hands and speak these words:

In this bed, I show my love.
In this bed, I share my body.
In this bed, I give my heart.
In this bed, we are as one.
Here lies my happiness as I give and live in total joy.
Blessed be to me and thee.

As you say, “Blessed be,” flick drops of your bed blessing oil from your fingers all across the bed until the cup is empty. Now, lie down and roll around in the bed. After all, that is what it is for!

Graceful Connection
Before you enjoy this friendly repast together, hold hands and recite this grace:
  1. Sister, brother, tribe of the soul, ones who care.
  2. Merry may we meet again to share.
  3. Breaking bread and quaffing mead,
we draw closer in word and deed.
  4. Blessing of love to all!

Chimes of Change Charm

If you have a dear friend, as I do, whom you occasionally drive crazy, you may sometimes receive the silent treatment. Try this charm to break the tension by literally breaking the silence.

Buy a wind chime, or, even better, make one from odd earrings, old keys, brass bells, and any other potentially musical objects you can find. Bless the chime by smudging it with sage smoke.

Closening the Ties That Bind

You can further empower your friendship amulets by knotting them in accordance with the laws of magic. If the cord binding your bags is knotted nine sacred times, you will have increased greatly the power of the spell. Nine is the number of idealism, altruism, generosity, tolerance, and sacrifice. Here is a rhyme to recite as you bind:

By knot of one, the spell is begun.
By knot of two, it comes true.
By knot of three, so mote it be.
By knot of four, ’tis strengthened more.
By knot of five, the magic is alive.
By knot of six, this spell shall I fix.
By knot of seven, the planets in heaven.
By knot of eight, I have sealed my fate.
By knot of nine, this work is divine.
So shall it be.

You can also make a magic knotted cord to tie around a paper scroll. On the paper might be a written desire, a spell, or a wish expressed to a friend in a letter.

Mending Hearts: Olde World Spell
Sol and Luna,
the sun needs the moon like the cock needs the hen.
The sun and the moon have both hatched from the same egg
and represent the eternal attraction of opposites.

Dreams of Devotion: Pillow Talk

To secure lasting love from a nascent romance, a love pillow can cast a powerful, binding spell. This spell works best if you use a soft, homemade pillow.

On a Friday, take two yards of pink satin fabric and stuff it with softest goose down and the dried petals of a red rose you’ve grown or received from your lover. Sew it with golden thread while you whisper:
