Witch's Willpower Brew: Invoking the Energy of Success

On a Monday, or any day when you need to ready yourself for important events, meetings, or other high-pressure circumstances, set aside a half-hour of quiet time and brew up some willpower to help you in any creative endeavors. Light a white candle anointed with peppermint oil, and then light spicy incense such as cinnamon.

Take a sprig of mint, some warm milk, and a few cinnamon sticks and stir these together clockwise in a white mug. Say aloud:

Light My Fire: DIY Massage Candles

Making massage candles is very similar to making any other type of potted candle. I recommend using soy wax as it is so gentle on the skin. Soy is also nice and soft, so it melts easily and stays together in a puddle after melting and can be reused for us thrifty crafters. It won’t irritate your skin unless you have a soy allergy; if you have an allergy to soy, you can use beeswax instead, which is widely used. (For example, beeswax is in nearly every single Burt’s Bees product.) The addition of the oils prevents it from hardening again and enables your skin to absorb it. Essential oils or cosmetic-grade fragrance oils are also added to create a soothing atmosphere. All soap-making fragrances, which are also soy candle safe, are perfect choices for scenting your massage candles. Try the basic directions below to make your first candle. For every three ounces of wax, you’ll add one ounce of liquid oil and one-quarter ounce of fragrance. I suggest making two candles in four-ounce metal tins while you master this craft.

Nonalcoholic Mead
  • 1 quart honey
  • 3 quarts distilled water
  • 1⁄2 cup lemon juice
  • 1 sliced lemon
  • 1 half-teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Boil five minutes and then cool and bottle immediately. Keep in the fridge to avoid fermentation, and enjoy.

Beltane Brew
Honeyed mead is revered as the drink of choice for the sexy pagan holy day of Beltane. It is an aphrodisiac, and with its sticky sweetness, it is perfect for dribbling on your lover’s body and then licking it off. This is my special recipe for honeyed mead, handed down through generations of Celtic witches. You will need:
 
  • 1 quart of honey
  • 3 quarts of distilled water
  • 1 packet of yeast
  • Herbs to flavor
  1. Mix the honey and water. Boil for five minutes. You can add the herbs in proportions to your liking; I prefer a teaspoon each of clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice.

  2. Add a packet of yeast and mix. Put in a large container. Cover with plastic wrap and allow it to rise and expand. Store the mixture in a dark place and let it sit for seven days.

To Your Health! Mulled Medieval Merriment

Start preparing this special mixture by pouring a gallon of unfiltered sweet apple cider into a big pot. Go for organic cider or juice from the farmer’s market for best taste and energetic effects, but it is even better if you can make cider from apples you have gathered or harvested. Take a bottle of your favorite low-cost red wine and heat it in a large pot gently on a low flame. Add sugar, cinnamon, and cloves to your taste, but include at least a teaspoon of cloves and a tablespoon each of sugar and cinnamon. Pour the cider into the warmed wine, and add thirteen whole cloves and six cinnamon sticks. Simmer, stirring every six minutes. Notice how your entire home fills with the spicy sweetness of merriment. After thirty minutes, it will be ready to serve.

You can make simple syrup, a base for any liqueur, in five short minutes by boiling a cup of sugar in a half cup of water. The method above can be used to create distinctive after-dinner drinks and digestives from angelica, anise, bergamot, hyssop, all mints, fennel and, perhaps the most special of all, violets. To your health!

Liquid Love: Spicy Cinnamon Liqueur

This popular beverage gives peppy energy and can also be a love potion. These few ingredients can lead to a lifetime of love and devotion:

  • 1 cup vodka
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander seed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup simple sugar syrup
 
Pour the vodka into a large canning jar and add in the herbs; cover and place in a cupboard for two weeks. Strain and filter until the result is clear liquid. Clean the canning jar and dry it thoroughly, then put the clear liquid back in. Add the simple syrup and place back on the shelf for a week. Store this in a dark-colored bottle that seals; you now have liquid love! You can drink it “neat” on its own, or add it to hot chocolate, water, tea, or milk for a delightful drink to share with your loved one.
