Brigid's Way: Reflections on the Celtic Divine Feminine Kindle Edition
Brigid's Way is a collection of poems and reflections on the Celtic goddess Brigid and the namesake Abbess of Kildare who is one of Ireland's patron saints. Brigid, as both goddess and saint, is a potent icon of the Celtic divine feminine consciousness that has survived various changes in the spiritual and religious life of Ireland over millenia.
The poems take as their starting point folklore about the St. Brigid and the goddess, who was one of the Tuatha dé Danaan. They weave in her symbols, attributes and associations. This is both an ancient Brigid of the mythic past, as well as a modern Brigid concerned with climate change and social justice.
Brigid's stories abound with thresholds and liminality. In this time of swift change and social challenge Brigid is an ideal icon for 21st century women and men.

As a renowned guide in Ireland hosting walks and talks to sites sacred to Brigid, author Smith like none other, brilliantly leads you on an intimate journey in Ireland without leaving the comforts of your home: "The divine feminine is truly the land and Ireland is a manifestation of her body sacred to Brigid goddess and saint." Brigid's Way is a divine portrait of both goddess and saint Brigid that touches the reader's soul, leaving them with a very personal 'knowing' of her and her sacred land. This magnificent read surely touched my soul!

Bee Smith's Brigid's Way is a meditation on the relationship between the land, the human heart, and the goddess Brigid. The poems are both spiritual and rooted in specific places and mundane events–a hallmark of the Irish approach to both, and of the pagan path. To note that Smith grew up in the US only adds to the force of this work: Like so many who came to Ireland, she has become more Irish than the Irish themselves.
The opening poem is a haibun, a combination of prose and haiku developed by the poet Bashō as a way to chronicle his journeys. This book holds many journeys, through part of the year, through lifetimes, through cycles of legend and history. Sometimes these all weave together in one poem: Amergin, written about the poet who claimed Ireland by naming himself in her landscape, links this heroic poetical act to the way a toddler names the world, to how we struggle to remember what we already (might) know, and how we lose language as we approach the end of life.
A strong thread throughout the collection is a celebration of the reemergence of the divine feminine. We see, through the many ways Brigid herself has been reinvented throughout history, the endless ability of the goddess to maintain her strength in quiet ways, bide her time, and wait for the right moment to be born anew.

A fresh and intimate look at Brigid is all of Her aspects....from an author who spends time walking the very land where She is still very much alive for those who know and follow Her. Highly recommended!

The poems in this book are loosely tied together by commentary on St. Brigid, but no real insight is offered into her or her life. Many of the poems are weakly-structured free verse relying on the commentary to force them into the collection's thematic structure.
All in all, the work does not express much of an emotional range, providing a flat affect that does not touch the soul. It falls quite wide of its proposed mark.

A woman's Celtic journey interspersed with deeply personal and moving life vignettes, legends and goddesses and elegant poems. Smith is a gifted writer whose words stir the heart and the imagination. Her book is both a geographic and spiritual road map to the soul.

I borrowed this book via Kindle Unlimited. I'm so glad I did. This is a hypnotically sensuous exploration of the Goddess Brigid in Her many manifestations. Her wisdom, Her adventures, Her struggles, Her island of Ireland, Her power to heal, and Her effect on the author, are all shared here. Witness this beautiful offering:
Hours later I swam up from the deep.
Gradually, pausing and testing each level of
consciousness,
Checking my internal weather.
No lightening. No thunder. A calm sea.
The Brat Bride has worked her charm,
the healing grace in the morning dew.
Smith weaves a wordsmith’s tour of Ireland and her Goddess, mixing actual history with devotionals and direct personal experience. It’s a tour that serves to inspire while recalling Brigid and mystical island that is Her home. If you feel called at all to explore the Divine Feminine, or seek to better understand the soul of the Irish, this is a wonderful read.
