Diotima

Diotima Mantineia began studying astrology in 1968, taking classes from Zoltan Mason in New York City. For the next 22 years, she practiced astrology only for herself and her friends, continuing her studies while watching an increasingly humanistic, psychologically oriented, modern astrology blossom through the work of leading astrologers such as Noel Tyl, Liz Greene, Rob Hand, Marion March, Stephen Arroyo and Howard Sasportas. In 1986, Diotima began her study of Wicca and started reading Tarot, discovering that she is a gifted intuitive. In 1991, she began practicing both astrology and Tarot professionally. She majored in plant and soil science both in college and grad school, and grows much of her own food and "materia magica" on her land in the mountains of western North Carolina. Diotima’s personal spiritual path is rooted in the Western mystery traditions, the principles of Yoga, and a profound connection with the natural world. Wicca gives structure to her spiritual journey, and she utilizes shamanic practices for healing and to live in harmony with Nature. Over 15 years of studying Chinese martial arts has given her a deep appreciation of Taoist thought which has strongly influenced her magical and personal philosophy. b2ap3_thumbnail_cafe-wha.jpg“There was music in the cafes at night, And revolution in the air.”
~ Bob Dylan

There’s a challenging solar eclipse happening on February 26, and the chart for this one will be in effect for at least 6 months to a year. Revolution is in the air, and so are illusion, deception, inchoate fears — as well as enchantment, inspiration, and the highest and best reaches of spirituality and compassion.

b2ap3_thumbnail_flamingo.jpgThis month’s New Moon falls on January 27, at 7:08 pm EST. The chart, predictive for the month ahead, features a number of powerful aspects that demand and catalyze change.

Venus in under considerable stress. She represents women, money, art, and relationships in a chart, and is in a challenging aspect to Saturn, so look for restrictions being imposed (or attempted) in these areas. But keep in mind that some restrictions can help bring appropriate, targeted growth and development. Ethical considerations and discussions around where responsibility falls will be both in the news and manifesting in our personal lives.

b2ap3_thumbnail_deep_dive.jpgWe’ll be taking a deep dive into emotional waters this month, as the New Moon in Scorpio and Mercury make a flowing trine aspect to Neptune. This is a fascinating, interwoven chart that speaks to the power of emotion. As we dive, we will be brought face-to-face with our deeply-held beliefs and how they can be in conflict with the beliefs we hold intellectually.

This is, of course, where we trip ourselves up repeatedly — when deep emotional imprints and the beliefs that resulted from them somehow manage to hijack our behavior. We eat that unhealthy food, hit the gas hard to run a red light, unleash our anger and resentment, or blurt out words we can’t take back. The kind of thing that leaves you shaking your head wondering how the hell you could have done that.

b2ap3_thumbnail_bright-autumn-leaves.jpgRegarding awakened souls, there have never been more able crafts in the waters than there are right now across the world. And they are fully provisioned and able to signal one another as never before in the history of humankind… Look out over the prow; there are millions of boats of righteous souls on the waters with you.
~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes

The Aries New Moon is in the spring, the Aries Full Moon in the fall (northern hemisphere). These are the seasons of change, and Aries is always pretty fearless when it comes to change. Aries tends to draw a sword and charge ahead, while the proverbial fearful angels watch in dismay — and maybe with a little bit of envy. This year, the Aries Full Moon is collaborating with iconoclastic Uranus and Eris, so over the next couple of weeks, we can expect not only change, but sudden, shocking changes and awakenings.

“Mother, mother
There’s too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There’s far too many of you dying
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some lovin’ here today”
Marvin Gaye

A friend of mine went on a rant on Facebook the other day. She’s a lovely woman whose posts are usually filled with warm tales of family, nature, and reflections on her Pagan spiritual life. She doesn’t often get angry, but now she was angry. Angry with the violence and hatred that was happening all around us, angry at the inability of our society to respond appropriately to the environmental crisis we are in the midst of, angry at the way people were treating each other. She detailed, in bullet points, about half a dozen of the things she had read about or seen that had brought her to this state, ending each point with “WHAT THE F**K” in big capital letters.

fall_leaves.jpgThis is the most important New Moon of the year. It’s an eclipse that will further emphasize the Saturn-Neptune square that has been dogging us this year, particularly in the political, social and environmental arenas, including an inability to get to the truth, “othering” (e.g. racism, misogyny, religious persecution), floods and fires and major problems with pollution, particularly water pollution. These and other Saturn-Neptune issues (finding truth, spiritual materialism, a pull towards authoritarianism) are being brought to our attention so we can fix them, both in our personal lives and on a larger stage. The eclipse insists we look at how we’re doing with that, and work on manifesting our spiritual ideals in a practical way.

As with all challenging charts — and make no mistake, this is a formidable chart — there is a tremendous amount of power being made available to us, so we will need to stay focused and sharp to make sure that power is directed to our benefit, and hopefully the benefit of all. The benefits here, if we work with the energy, include powerful, practical visions, a balancing of perspective, improved health, wisdom born of experience, and a deeper insight into our personal spiritual paths.
