An Open Letter to Televangelist Pat Robertson

The 700 Club

Hey Pat:

Got a question for you.

You said that your god told you that Donald Trump would win the 2020 election. He didn't. Even you admit that now.

Given what you've said previously, then, that leaves us with several possible explanations.

  1. “God” was wrong.
  2. “God” changed his mind.
  3. You misunderstood what “God” told you.
  4. What you thought was “God” speaking to you wasn't “God” at all. (I'll leave aside the question of who, or what, it actually was.)
  5. Your god doesn't exist, and you're living in a fantasy world as much as Donald Trump.
  6. "God" exists, but he doesn't talk to you.
  7. Trump really did win the election; he just lost the presidential election.
  8. Some other god, more powerful than yours, intervened and changed the results.
  9. After all these years, you still haven't learned to tell the difference between "God"'s voice and the promptings of your own unconscious mind.

So, Pat, read me this oracle. In all candor, let me ask you: which one was it?

I'd really like to know.

Yours most sincerely,

Steven W. Posch

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.

I'm pretty sure that the only "God" that the Evangelical Christians have been listening too for the past four years is Mammon the numen of money. Most of the televangelist wing of Evangelicals have been following Mammon for decades. YHVH apparently got kicked out of many churches quite some time ago.

I expect of any priest or priestess that he or she be able to tell the difference between the voice of the god or goddess and the voice of one's own unconscious mind.

If you can't--as in Mr. Robertson's case, for example--you're no priest or priestess, to my thinking, no matter what your claims.
