We the Free

They call us pagans, but we know who we are.

We are the Free Peoples of the Earth.

We are the free peoples, our gods the gods of the free.

Free is our goddess. Being her people, we bear her name.

Let the shackled call us what they will. In the end, they are slaves.

But we are Firstborn.

We are the Free.

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.

"As a sign that ye are truly free, Ye shall be naked in your rites."

Very few pagans are truly free any more. Almost all slavishly obey the body fear of monotheist culture and loudly criticize anyone who violates that oppression. Few pagan gatherings and conferences even allow skyclad as an option. Many Priests and Priestesses have stopped reciting the words because they won't allow the freedom to be naked in their rites. Its kind of sad.

Here in the Midwest, for the most part, public skyclad disappeared during the Reagan Era and has yet to reappear.
But as long as there are witches, it will never go away. We're the people of the long term.
Priestess and writer Luisah Teish once observed to me: "People do love their chains."
