Review: The Fifth Element

The Fifth Element
by Kellee Maize

Female Pagan rap artist Kellee Maize released her fifth album, The Fifth Element, on February 14th, 2014. The album features 11 tracks of fun, funky hip hop and rap songs with a spiritual beat all their own. The overall theme of the album is Love. Every song deals with the subject of love in its own distinctive way.

The music is a refreshing, positive message of hope and love. "Anyway" is a song about hope and making it through even the toughest battles, on a personal and on a universal level. "Gotta Love Me" is about self affirmation and taking the first step to being able to change the world. The title track sums up the album perfectly. "I am the love. I am the one. I am the mother, father, daughter and the son."

The Fifth Element is a sophisticated step forward for Kellee, with complex rhymes and lyrics that even the most casual of hip hop fan can enjoy. The melodies and riffs are exciting and mixed expertly into a great sound. The beats and melodic rhymes are reminiscent of tribal chanting and in a similar way can take the listener out of the time and place that they are in.

Being kind of an old geezer, I can't help but be reminded of PM Dawn's 1991 album Of the Heart, Of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience. Listening to a positive, spiritual hip hop album like this is a nice change of pace from what has become traditional Pagan music, or even modern rock and pop music.

"I Know You" has a nice dubstep sound to it and probably my favorite track on the album. Thanks for sharing this since I would never have heard of her otherwise.
