Like tides, lives have high and low times. Sometimes you're riding on top of the wave, sometimes you're impossibly riding inside the tube of the wave and it is so cool and amazing, but sometimes you're in the trough. You can stand up and yell "Make wave!" or just wait it out and it's coming around the same either way.

If you're feeling low, and feeling like you aren't doing enough with your religious and magical practice, this advice is for you.

I received my third reading on the subject of whether I should take a job as a presenter at a specific online event.

Reading C: Tarot, from Lady Firespring at Sacred Spring

I got a tarot reading from Lady Silverspring. We spoke on the phone. At the start, she asked me what my purpose for the reading was, and I indicated that I had been wondering if I should take that job and at that point it was looking like no, but I wanted to go ahead with the reading because it was part of the next steps I needed to take on my career path. My friend said I should make a more open ended question, so I went with, "What's my best career move at this time?"

Surprisingly to me, although I had to laugh a bit at how much it dovetailed with internal godphone conversations I've had, the first thing that came up was that money is an illusion. I was like, "I know, sunshine is real, my cat is real, money is an illusion, but I have to treat it like it's real." And the next card was the Hanged Man, which made me laugh out loud. "Yes, Odin." I saw him in my mind's eye stroking his beard and saying "mmm" to indicate his presence.

As far as the convention job went, I should not take it, and basically, I don't have to take opportunities just because they fall out of the sky at me. The things I already decided that I want to do for money and career, that I'm already taking steps to go out and get for myself, are the things I should be doing. Those are long term and I need patience and trust and faith to keep going but that doesn't mean I just wait, I do things, and I should keep doing those things.

Another thing that came up in the reading was grief. I need to give myself space for that. I don't have to fill all my time with accomplishing things and keeping busy. My friend said the word Guardian more than once, and I let her know that that was a title Tom had now. She said he had decided to stay around as a protector instead of reincarnating and I said that was correct, Tom had been a Heimdall's man while he was alive and he had chosen to become one of Heimdall's Guardians.

After that our conversation became more general. We hadn't talked in far too long. It was a great reading. It confirmed what I had heard in my other readings, that I should not take that job, but it went farther and told me about what I should be doing instead. The tarot reading told me that my job right now is to grieve and to do the the long term things I'd already been doing before the job opportunity arrived. I should continue as I had already been doing before.

Dear Devin- Should I Date my Coven Mate?

Every once in a while I get an email from a fan or a seeker along the path who has a really good question. I decided to compile some of the best questions and reformat them for the blog. Names have been adjusted to protect identities. Do you have a question? Email me at Devin@devinhunter.net and I’ll try to answer it in a blog post or on the show!

Dear Devin,

Advice for Beginners on Wiccan, Pagan & Witchcraft Paths

Advice for Beginners on Wiccan, Pagan & Witchcraft Paths

My years of experience will do no good for anyone if I do not share it with you. I hope my words of wisdom and advice help you avoid many of the mistakes I made.

Spirituality is a process. Witchcraft is a journey, not a destination. There are many factors to consider when choosing a spiritual path. Spirituality is about devotion and practice. One cannot simply associate one’s self with a path, and call it their own. You must practice it. You must become a part of it. You must be willing and able to live that path.

The path of Wicca, Witchcraft, and Paganism is not about shock value. It is not about making your oppressive relatives angry, or proving yourself different in main stream society. Yes, by nature we tend to go against the grain, but not always so harshly. The path is about devotion. It is about finding a spiritual balance and focus that makes you a better person. It is about finding your place in the world that also helps make the world a better place.

The 5 of Pentacles & Spiritual Lessons Learned from Snow-Shoveling

This post also appears on www.tarotbyhilary.com.

This week may have been the week of the “Snowpocalypse That Never Was” in the media, and people complaining about how the press and the people making the decisions overreacted. Me? I’m firmly in the “better safe than sorry” camp in that regard. Even my card of the day for the start of the storm was the 5 of Pentacles… I was tending to agree with the weathermen that the storm would be as bad as they said it would be.

What a great post, Hilary. I'll never look at snow-shoveling. winter volunteering, or the 5 of Pentacles quite the same way again.

Tarot Blog Hop: Oh Shut Up, Mom!

PREVIOUS | MASTER | NEXT

For those of you who are new to the Tarot Blog hop, the idea behind this is that the Tarot community joins together every six weeks to blog on a specific topic. That topic is proposed by whomever is wrangling the hop. We began in 2012 with an Imbolc hop that asked, "How can I be a better candle." This is our third year. The bloggers change and we are always happy for more to join us. You can learn more here. All those who work to promote camaraderie and community within the Tarot world are welcome.

As you may have noticed, I've been a bit scarce around here since last autumn. Many changes have occurred in my life which I won't bore you with just now. However, one good thing that came out of the past several months is a better idea of how I want to use this blog. See, each of my blogs has a personality, and this one was taking a little longer to coalesce. I liked having a place to write about some more 101-focused information, since there are still plenty of folks who are just learning, but I was having trouble coming up with ideas--until now. While I have spent many years helping other pagan folk along their paths, you may consider this my first official advice column.

You're welcome to ask me questions at lupa.greenwolf@gmail.com. You will be anonymous, though your question will be posted as quoted. The more questions I get, the more I can post!
