You’ve Lost Your Head

Dreaming about being headless is often a sign that there is a disconnect between your head and your heart (what you’re thinking and what you’re feeling). For example, you might be thinking so much about an upcoming match of vocabulary test coming up and doing so much memorization and study that you are living temporarily mostly in your head and thinking, thinking, thinking. When I am consumed with a project and forget to eat, that is when I know I am too much in my mind and head. You may be lacking a sense of balance in your life. Try to identify the role that your heart and mind play in your life. Is one taking more control than the other? You may be so focused on common sense and logic that you have started to neglect or suppress your emotions. On the other hand, it’s possible that you are letting your feelings dictate your actions without thinking things through.

Movement Dreams: Boats

Having dreams about boats is often a sign of how well you are navigating your emotions in your waking life. How do you cope when bad situations come your way—do you sink into a sea of negative emotions, or do you stay afloat through the storm? Try to remember what the water looked like in your dream. Were there calm waters and clear skies? This could mean that you are experiencing “smooth sailing” in your life. You confidently handle your own emotions and everything in your life feels like it’s under control. On the other hand, if the boat experienced rough seas in your dream—crashing waves or winds tearing at the sails—it might mean that you’re struggling to keep your emotions under control. You might be feeling overwhelmed in your waking life, or letting unhappy thoughts and feelings get the better of you. Think about ways that you can comfortably and safely express what you are feeling. Let this negativity run its course, but don’t let it sink you.

Dreams: You Are Guilty of a Crime

Dreaming that you’re guilty of a crime can be a sign that you are feeling bad about a mistake you made when you were awake. Think about your actions and interactions in the real world. Have you done anything recently that could have hurt one of your friends in some way? Offend Perhaps you said something that offended a family member? If you know you have done something wrong, this dream could also be a sign that you are afraid of the consequences of your actions. Those consequences will catch up to you sooner or later, so it’s time for you to own up to them and make things right.

Dreams of Getting Trapped or Crushed

If you are having dreams about being crushed under something, trapped in an elevator, or confined in any way, it’s probably a sign from your subconscious that there is something in your waking life that is holding you back. If you’re struggling with school, have hit a rough patch in a friendship or relationship, or just feel stuck in a rut, these feelings of frustration can translate into dreams of being literally trapped. Try to identify anything in your waking life that is holding you back. Is it some old belief systems? Relationships you’ve grown out of but are afraid to let go of? Recognizing that it’s there is the first step to moving on and creating space for yourself to grow.

Dreams on Drowning

Dreams about drowning can be interpreted a few different ways. The most common interpretation is that you are feeling overwhelmed. If there are too many things happening in your life, you may feel like you can hardly take a breath. You might be afraid of losing control. Anything from deadlines or, a heavy homework load, to friend or family drama, or responsibilities at home can make you feel trapped. If things in your waking life feel hopeless, this dream can be a sign that you have hit a dead end. Water as a dream symbol is associated with emotion, so think about the feelings that are bogging you down in life and what steps you can take to let go of some of the pressure you’re feeling.

On a more positive note, this dream can also symbolize rebirth which means some exciting changes are ahead. Perhaps you want to take up a new hobby or learn a new language. A new friend in your life is also a positive change. Or, you might want to sign up for a fun extracurricular activity at school. This will help you get there!

Wearing the Wrong Clothes

Clothes symbolize the version of yourself that you show to other people, or how others perceive you. If you are having a dream that you are dressed inappropriately, whether that’s wearing a wedding dress to a baseball game or gym clothes to the school dance, your subconscious self might be trying to tell you that it’s time to stop worrying about how people perceive you and to start expressing yourself freely. We tend to dress up based on what sort of image we want to show to others, but in putting up this sort of front, you might be stifling your own individuality—trading who you really are for who you think others want you to be. What your clothes feel like can tell you something about yourself as well: too-tight clothes are a sign that there is something in your waking life that is holding you back, while clothes that are too loose can indicate that you are feeling inadequate. It is possible that you are also in a circumstance that you feel unprepared for.

Dreams Help Us With All the Feels

Our dreams are like a lab where our brain tests out emotions and enables us to process them in a healthy way. This is called the “The Emotional Regulation Theory,” and researchers claim that this is the main function of dreams—to support us in coping with our feelings and, most importantly, the really difficult ones such as loss, grief, trauma, sadness, and those *feels* that are an unavoidable part of life. Your dreaming mind is a safe space where you can “practice” for what you might encounter in real life. I am sure you have had emotionally charged dreams in your REM sleep and woke up thinking it was all real. These vivid dreams are your brain at work.

Do you share your dreams with others and talk about them? I suggest you do, as neuroscientists, those who specialize in how our brains work, discovered a high degree of empathy in those who discuss their dreams with family and friends. This is yet another way in which dreams are really good for us!
