Lighting the Fire of Friendship

Take a large yellow pillar candle anointed with lemon or bergamot essential oil and charge it with positivity toward yourself. Scratch your own name into it and write: “I love (your name).”

Light the candle and say four times:

The Ties That Bind: Your Friendship Altar

To prepare the way for letting new friends enter your life or to focus your attention on existing friendships, set up an altar where you can concentrate your energy and clarify your intentions. If you already have an altar in place, incorporate some of the following elements to enhance your relationships with others as well with yourself. The more you use your altar, the more powerful your spells will be.

Your altar can be a low table, the top of a shelf, or even a shelf. First, purify the space with the smoke of a lit sage bundle. This is called “smudging” and is an essential part of witchcraft. You can dry wild sage to use or purchase it in any herb store. Once you have smudged the space, cover your friendship altar with a pink-colored scarf or cloth and place pink and white candles in each of the four corners. (Pink is the color of affection and white represents purity.) Place rose quartz and calming fluorite stones around a vase of fresh flowers, often with poppies, daisies, or whatever connotes fun and friendship to you.

Friendly Feasts: Rite of Connection

Before you enjoy a friendly repast together, hold hands and recite:

Sister, brother, tribe of the soul, ones who care.
Merry may we meet again to share.
Breaking bread and quaffing mead
We draw closer in word and deed.
Blessing of love to all!

Zipping down the highway on the way to a heathen friend's empty house, the clouds ahead formed a giant eye that stretched over the entire western sky. The two pointy ends of the eye reached the south and the north, and the eyeball in the center watched over me, the protective eye of Odin who looks after travelers.

My trip on the highway was just across town, so this was not the kind of journey one might associate with Odin the Wanderer, but he was there with me nonetheless. The purpose of my trip was also not what one would typically associate with the goddess Sigyn, but I've come to realize that looking after someone's house while they can't is also a type of caregiving. This was the second time I was called upon to suddenly take over the management of someone's life and property for which I was unprepared, the first time being when I did so for my mom several years ago. This time I had experience and knew more what I was doing, but I had even less authority to work with, and the property was in worse shape, so it had some unique challenges.

On this full moon I lie here in an empty bed. I'm not sad or lonely, just slightly anxious. Why? My husband is driving a four hour round trip for work and the weather is to turn nasty.

So I take some time to enjoy this alone time. The kids are in bed as well.

A Council of Crones

Even wise women need wise women. Life likes to mix things up. Including messages. People are complex critters. If only they could be as straightforward as taming feral cats! To navigate life I have my council of crones.

I am that most fortunate of women who has collected and maintained connections with smart, savvy, talentd, empathic and compassionate women who are scattered across many continents. They come from varied life and professional experience.  Not all have grey hair yet. But what they share is the wisdom of the cailleach. Each has been to the brink, eyeballed the abyss, didn't blink, and come back to tell the tale.

When the 2 of Cups reversed has absolutely nothing to do with a romantic squabble…

The other morning I was running around trying to get my stuff together for an event I was going to later on in the day. Before I got too crazed and before the day got away from me, I sat down with a purpose: doing my morning meditation, my morning pages, and my card of the day.

After my meditation and my morning pages and pulling the card of the day, but before writing out my interpretation of the card of the day, my bestie called to say about 15 minutes before picking me up for our plans that she wasn’t picking me up after all… and that I’d have to find my way to the event we were both attending myself.

It wasn’t about the driving myself… got no problems doing that. It was the last-minute cancellation/change of plans that drove me nuts.

After seething a bit and complaining to my husband, I sat down to write my interpretation of the card of the day. I sat down and took a look at what I had pulled.

The 2 of Cups. Reversed.

So that’s what the 2 of Cups reversed meant… not the lover’s quarrel I was fully expecting after pulling that card. Nope. Not at all. It was the fight with someone else that I love deeply… just not in THAT way.
