 The Five Seals of Temple Worship

(In Which Our Intrepid Blogger Goes All Mystical on the Reader, or Something)

See here in the mosaic floor before the altar, these five inset seals in a line, marking a path to Holiness, and from it.

These are the five stations of the daily offerings.

Here, farthest from the altar, you stand to make the offering.

Next, before it, is where you touch, bowing to touch the ground.

Upon the third, three paces from the first, you stand to make the prayers. (Having offered, you now draw near, to offer up prayers for the people.)

Before it, fourth, is where you touch, bowing to touch the ground.

And here, fifth, nearest the altar, is where, at the end—prayers spoken, offering made—you kiss the Earth.

Mabh, bring us together;

Mabh, bring us through.

Here at Temple of the Moon, we offer twice daily the old tribal prayers for the welfare of the People: that we may have well-being, that we may prosper, that our numbers may increase.

The first and last prayers of each offering are addressed, of course, to Earth: for us, the beginning and end of all things.

In this time of brokenness, when so much that we know and love is overturned, as we walk a long, Dark Way, I find myself adding to the customary prayers, two more:

Mabh, bring us together;

Mabh, bring us through.

Naturally, they address Earth, our beloved Earth. Who better to call on than the Mother, out of our deepest need?

They call to her by her sacred love name, her name of power, voiced as MAHV: a name of Birth, close-open-close, and the Breath of Life within. This name I had from my teacher, Tony Kelly, many years ago. Call her by this name, and give her your kiss of love—Love to you, my Mabh—and she will take you into her secrets.

The Secret Temple

The secret temple stands in the heart of the war zone.

Few people even know that it is there.

Through the chaos, the mayhem, the uncertainty, the liturgies continue.

May the people have life. May the people have food. May the people have beauty.

Twice daily, the priest makes the offering and prays on the people's behalf.

May the people have life. May the people have food. May the people have beauty.

In all times, year in, year out, the liturgies continue.

May the people have life. May the people have food. May the people have beauty.

Now, in time of conflict, to the three traditional prayers, the priest adds a fourth:

Work of Love

More than 35 years ago, we kindled a fire in the old way, wood on wood.

That same fire has burned here at Temple of the Moon ever since.

Candle lit from candle, fire from fire: the long, slow, patient work of years, keeping the Fire burning.

At midnight tonight, by order of the governor, the state of Minnesota goes into covid lockdown. All non-essential businesses are to be closed. All temples and other houses of worship will shut their doors. People will shelter in place.

So today I head across the River to pick up a case of temple candles. Some things are too important to lay down.

Here at the temple, the twice-daily offerings will continue. The prayers, the praise will not end.

The Moon is a Mirror

Our temple Goddess wears a crown of Three Moons, and the disc in the center is a mirror.

Many are its meanings, but this foremost: that the Moon is Herself a mirror.

Part Three: A Story of Awakening-X'anyuae

She stepped out onto the glistening waters, hovering just above the surface seemingly weightless to any who may have observed. Once again, she breathed deeply into the radiant core of her bodies drawing up the energy of the waters and allowing them to move through her. Light emanated from her now expanded form and layer upon layer of her bodies moved undulating in response to the echoing she was calling them to.......
