A Witch Like Me

A Witch Like Me
by Sirona Knight
New Page Books

This latest offering by Sirona Knight (creator of The Shapeshifter Tarot) is a compilation of responses to a questionnaire given to 14 of today’s “leading Wiccan authors.” The subjects include the likes of Knight herself (she’s humble, at least), Raymond Buckland, Z. Budapest and Silver Ravenwolf. The questionnaires ask the subjects to describe their paths, how they came to be where they are, childhood experiences, and so forth.

I think it is pretty arrogant for Knight to proclaim that the heroes of the “Wiccan Movement” are authors who have churned out such Earth-shattering tomes as Greenfire: Making Love With the Goddess, and Magical Needlework, or — brilliant title! — Magic of Chant-O-Matics. They’re (mostly) nice people who have contributed to Wicca, but come on, Sirona; they’re squirrels like you and me, just looking for a nut.

While the subjects’ responses are mostly well done, parts that Knight wrote about herself I found trite and insipid. Knight also interjected editorial comments into the various chapters, interrupting the flow of the narrative and reducing the quality of the book as a whole.

Some of the chapters I found to be — ahem — less than humble, particularly Budapest’s and Buckland’s. Personally, I would have loved to have seen a chapter for Isaac Bonewits who deserved a spot at least as much as the rest. Upon reflection, I suppose that adding one more ego to this weighty tome might have made the book too heavy to carry.
