Catholic Church Repudiates 'Doctrine of Discovery.' Big Deal.

Indigenous activists share mixed feelings on Vatican repudiation of Doctrine of Discovery

An Open Letter to Pope Francis

Sir:

So, the Roman Catholic Church has (finally) officially repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery, the despicable papal declaration that for centuries has sanctioned the rape, pillage, and forced christianization of Indigenous peoples everywhere.

Well, bully for you.

Welcome to the economy of cheap salvation. Christians. They do something heinous; they say sorry; they think that takes care of it. Ha.

We of the Old Ways know better. We understand that prayer without offering is only so much moving air. We expect deeds with words. When you wrong someone, saying sorry isn't anywhere near enough; it's only the beginning. You say sorry, then you actively work to undo the wrong that you've done.

Sorry Francis, no forgiveness from me. The Catholic Church has grievously wronged Indigenous peoples all over the world, including the Indigenous peoples of Europe. You say you're sorry? Great.

When do we see the reparations?

Yours most sincerely,

Steven W. Posch

Poet, scholar and storyteller Steven Posch was raised in the hardwood forests of western Pennsylvania by white-tailed deer. (That's the story, anyway.) He emigrated to Paganistan in 1979 and by sheer dint of personality has become one of Lake Country's foremost men-in-black. He is current keeper of the Minnesota Ooser.
